Monadnocks and Peneplains

A monadnock (also known as an inselberg) is an isolated mountain, a remnant of higher mountains, composed of resistant rock and surrounded by a peneplain. The word 'monadnock' comes from Mount Monadnock in New Hampshire; it's the Native American name for the same mountain, and it means either 'smooth mountain' or 'isolated mountain'.

A peneplain is a more or less level land surface, produced by erosion over a long period and undisturbed by crustal movement.

Australia's Uluru (Ayers Rock) is an example of a monadnock.
